🐕 Off-leash hikes
These trails sit inside designated off-leash Dog Play Areas (SF Rec & Park) or GGNRA off-leash zones, where dogs can roam under voice control. Stay in the posted off-leash area, keep a leash handy, and mind the cliff edges.
🦮 On-leash hikes
On these GGNRA, Presidio and city trails, dogs are welcome but must stay leashed (max 6 ft) — they include some of the most spectacular coastal and forest walks in San Francisco.
- Off-leash ≠ everywhere. Dogs run free only inside marked Dog Play Areas and GGNRA off-leash zones — leash up on connecting trails and wherever signs say so.
- Federal vs. city land. GGNRA (Fort Funston, Lands End) and the Presidio set their own rules, separate from SF Rec & Park — always check the signage.
- Foxtails in summer. Many of these grassy hills are full of foxtails once the grass dries out — read what every dog owner should know about foxtails.
- Fog, wind & hills. The west side and the summits get cold and blustery — bring water and a layer, even in “summer.”
- Recall near edges & roads. At Fort Funston and Lands End the cliffs are real; at Twin Peaks the road is close. Keep a solid recall.
- Pack it out. Carry bags and scoop every time — access depends on dogs being good guests.
Andy can take your pooch on a longer adventure walk or drive them to the trailhead & back. Add it when you book.
