Hikes vs daycare

A tired dog is good. A settled dog is better.

Here’s how a day on the trails compares to a day at daycare.

Daily trail hikes compared with group daycare, across seven things that matter to a dog’s day.
Most dogs do better here Daily trail hikes Right for some dogs Group daycare
Exercise At least two hours of sustained, structured movement on varied terrain — builds endurance, muscle tone, joints, and healthy weight Stop-and-go bursts of play, often on flat ground, with long idle stretches between
Mental enrichment New trails, new terrain, and hundreds of new scents every outing — sniffing is real cognitive work Largely the same indoor room or yard, day after day
Stress and arousal Ends in genuine decompression; dogs come home settled and sleep deeply Noise, crowding, and high arousal can send dogs home wired rather than tired
Socialization Small, hand-matched groups with a consistent handler Large groups with less predictable dog-to-dog interactions
Behavior Reduces boredom, restlessness, and anxiety over time — and builds recall, loose-leash walking, and check-ins with people Can inadvertently reinforce rough play, barking, and over-arousal
Day structure A focused two-hours-plus adventure, with door-to-door pickup and drop-off on top of the trail time A long day away from home, much of it downtime
Best for Dogs who need real exercise, enrichment, nature, and calmer structure Highly social dogs who genuinely enjoy busy group environments

How it works

Booked in under a minute

1

Pick your hike days

Choose the weekdays your dog hikes β€” Mon–Fri, from one day a week up. We head out in the mornings for at least two hours on the trail, plus the drive there and back, and that schedule then repeats every week until you say otherwise.

2

We arrange a meet & greet

Before your dog joins the pack, we set up a quick meet & greet in person to get to know each other and make sure it’s the right fit.

3

Relax β€” it’s handled

A video from every adventure, and a happily tired pooch waiting for you at the end of the day.

Not sure which days suit your dog, or whether they’ll love the pack? Make a booking and we’ll talk through everything together at the meet & greet. πŸ‘‹

πŸ“‘ How we keep track of an off-leash dog

The Garmin Alpha 300 handheld and the GPS collar a dog wears on the trail
The Garmin Alpha 300 handheld and its GPS collar.

Every dog hiking off leash wears a Garmin Alpha 300 β€” the tracking system built for working-dog handlers, not a consumer pet tag clipped to a collar. The important part: it does not rely on a cell network. The collar takes its position straight from the GPS satellites and sends it to the handheld over Garmin’s own radio link, so it keeps reporting from the bottom of a canyon or the back side of a ridge where a phone shows no bars.

That difference is the whole reason we use one:

  • Cell-based trackers go dark off-grid. The tags on a monthly data plan only report where their carrier has coverage β€” and open space is exactly where that coverage runs out.
  • Bluetooth tags need a crowd. AirTag-style trackers borrow the phones of strangers passing nearby. On a fire road on a Tuesday morning, there are no strangers to borrow from.
  • We watch movement, not a last-known dot. The Alpha updates continuously, so we can see which way a dog is heading and walk to them β€” rather than guess from wherever the signal last dropped.

In practice it’s rarely needed β€” the pack sticks together, and that’s the point of a small, stable group. But if someone follows their nose a little too far down a deer trail, we know exactly where they are: no guesswork, no searching, no waiting for a bar of signal.

Andy, your dog sitter

Hi, I’m Andy πŸ‘‹

Dogs are my favorite companions β€” and there’s nothing I love more than getting them out on the trails. I lead a small, stable pack on morning adventures through the hills and woods of Marin, where the same friends hike together week after week.

Every adventure is at least two hours of actual trail time β€” paws on the ground, climbing, romping, splashing through creeks and working the body and the mind β€” and the door-to-door drive comes on top of that, so the driving never eats into your dog’s time out there. Off leash (preferred, but optional) or on, your choice. Your pup comes home happily tired, and we send you a video from every adventure.

Andy was phenomenal with our two husky mixes. They’re high energy and he kept them busy, walking them a bunch and playing with them. He’s also a wonderful house guest β€” left everything sparkling and clean.

Reliable, prompt, and very communicative. He sent us daily pics, which we loved, and our pets were clearly happy. The house was also spotless when we returned. We’ll definitely be asking him to sit again!

Andy is the best pet sitter any pet parent can ask for. We were away two weeks β€” he kept our cat engaged, sent constant updates and pictures, and by the end the two had bonded. Highly recommend.
